PSHEE and RSE at Nansledan School
At Skol Nanseldan, we provide our children with opportunities to learn about individuality, self care and responsibilities through our dialogical and enquiry based approach to learning. Through our PSHEE (physical, social, health, economic education) curriculum, our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community ensuring they develop life-long skills. Linking to our STEAM focused curriculum, PSHEE has links to Science and the changes each individual goes through, both physically and emotionally. There is a defined focus on learning how to navigate an ever-changing society with a focus on the liberal arts, encompassing moral and ethical dilemmas through discussion in KS2.
Intent
It is our intent that personal, social and health education (PSHEE) enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. For all students from EYFS to Year 6 our curriculum aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially in a diverse society.
Early Years:
In the EYFS, Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED) is one of three Prime Areas of Learning which demonstrates the importance of knowing who you are, where you fit in and feeling good about yourself. The children’s sense of well-being runs throughout every interaction and activity within the EYFS whether adult-led or child-initiated providing children with the tools to build resilience when faced with challenges, to create and maintain healthy relationships, and to celebrate the effort they have demonstrated.
Impact
Our PSHEE curriculum raises self-awareness, group awareness, collaboration skills, teamwork experience, respectfulness as well as much more, ensuring students are prepared for the wider world and their position in it.
If your child raises an issue at home that you are not sure how to respond to and you wish to gain further information, please see the class teacher in the first instance for guidance on what was covered in the lesson.
Relationship and Sex Education (RSE)
‘Today’s children and young people are growing up in an increasingly complex world and living their lives seamlessly on and offline….children and young people need to know how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way’
SCARF is fully compliant with the DfE Statutory Relationships and Health Education Guidance. This includes ALL the statutory requirements for RSE and Health Education. SCARF ensures all children are given this human reproduction information in an age and stage appropriate way.
At Skol Nansledan, we recognise the need to equip children to understand what healthy and positive relationships are and how to keep themselves safe. Therefore, Relationships Education is not only about intimate relationships, it also includes learning about families and friendships, kindness and acceptance of others who are different from ourselves, how we treat and look after ourselves and the importance of community.
Implementation
At Skol Nansledan, we are using the leading children’s health and wellbeing charity, Coram Life Education (CLE), to support us in meeting the legal requirements of teaching PSHEE. We use Coram Life Education’s online SCARF teaching resources to support our teaching of PSHEE and RSE. SCARF stands for Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience & Friendship so the programme reflects our core values and teaches attitudes of understanding and acceptance of those of other cultures, faiths and capabilities.
More information about Coram Life Education and SCARF can be found on their website: http://www.coramlifeeducation.org.uk
SCARF consists of six themed units of work containing weekly lessons. The themes are whole-school and are supported and developed further through assemblies. Our EYFS provision of Personal, Social and Emotional Development education is interwoven alongside our SCARF curriculum.
We endeavour for our children to reflect on their learning in PSHEE lessons continuously, using what they have learnt in class in real life experiences. We often welcome guest speakers in school and will highlight current events and awareness events through our assemblies and fundraising efforts.
